Carbon Potential Control in Industrial Carburising

Accurate carbon potential control is essential for producing consistent case depths in gas carburising and carbonitriding processes. Too high a Cp leads to surface carbide networks and poor toughness; too low produces insufficient case depth and soft surfaces.

The carbon potential is related to the equilibrium between the gas atmosphere and the steel surface at temperature. Our calculator uses established thermodynamic relationships to convert measured gas compositions (CO, CO₂, CH₄ from an IR gas analyser) or dew point readings into carbon potential in wt% carbon.
