Gas Train Components

  • Inlet isolating valve
Manual or motorised, upstream of all controls
  • Gas pressure regulator
    First-stage and second-stage regulation
  • Filter / strainer
Inline, 100–200 µm mesh, before regulators
  • Low pressure switch (LPS)
Trips burner on supply pressure loss
  • High pressure switch (HPS)
    Trips on over-pressure downstream
  • Safety shut-off valves (SSOV)
Two in series — redundant safety function
  • Valve proving system (VPS)
Tests SSOV seat integrity before each light-off
  • Metering orifice / control valve
    Combustion air/gas ratio control
  • Manual test point
Gauge connection before and after each valve

Safety Tests Covered

  • Valve proving system (VPS) test procedure and acceptance criteria
  • Gas train tightness test (IGEM/UP/1, IGEM/UP/2)
  • Low pressure cutout test — gas pressure switch trip point
  • High pressure cutout test — over-pressure switch verification
  • Flame failure response time measurement
  • BMS interlock functional test sequence
  • Air/gas ratio check at full and minimum fire
  • Purge timer verification against combustion volume
  • Annual gas safety inspection checklist (Gas Safe Register requirements)

IGEM/UP/2 and Industrial Gas Train Safety

IGEM/UP/2 (2nd Edition) is the Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers' standard for gas installations in industrial and commercial premises. It mandates the minimum safety requirements for gas train design, component selection, testing, and documentation for installations in the UK operating above 35 kW.

Our gas train reference tool provides component selection guidance, IGEM/UP/2 compliance checklists, and step-by-step test procedures for the annual safety inspection required under Gas Safe Register obligations. Bloor Engineering holds Gas Safe accreditation and carries out gas train inspections, commissioning, and BMS interlocking on industrial furnaces throughout the UK — the reference data in this tool is drawn directly from that field experience.
